DIY: Easy-Peezy Fire Starter

Share

Today's DIY is super easy.

Here's the thing…for you guys out there, unless you wanna head to the market to buy cotton face pads, I recommend you snag some from the wife or daughter's stash…..but don't say that I didn't warn you about damage control! Your alibi? “I was being resourceful & simulating a MacGyver that will save our lives in the future!”

Or, it might be the  case that you're a guy that has these in your toolbox or storage supplies for the females under your roof.

In any event, this fire starter was super cool! I'm gonna make some this weekend with my daughter & son since they are fascinated by anything related to live fire.

I like this and plan to try them out soon. I already have a similar one in my kits but with a slightly different approach. I use the square cotton pads (although the shape is irrelevant) infused with petroleum jelly. This is a minor variant of the old scout trick of cotton balls and PJ, usually stored in 35mm film cans. (Consult an elder re. 35mm film cans) I store the infused pads in rectangles of heavy duty kitchen foil. Placing the pad on one side of tsehe foil and fold foil in half. Seal the parallel open sides with 2 or 3 foldand s. Next fold remaining open end 2 or 3 times to close. This yields a small flat packet that takes up little room in a pocket or kit. The petroleum jelly is slightly sticky and magnesium flakes will stick to it, a great help in breezy weather. The foil can be used as a moisture barrier in wet conditions. Foil is always handy. The clean cottenn/pj pad could be used for first aid supplies.
